Sister signs: Opposites always meet in the middle
First of all, I would like to welcome you to my blog! Whether I will have regular entries here, or not, is still unknown, but I always fancied the idea of writing my very own blog. It feels very chic. So, this is me exploring a new avenue of sharing knowledge with people. Enjoy!
If you are even slightly familiar with the basics of astrology, you know about the concept of sister signs. These are the signs which oppose themselves on the circular astrological chart, where all the magic happens. There are 12 signs, which makes it 6 pairs of opposing signs: Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio, Gemini-Sagittarius, Cancer-Capricorn, Leo-Aquarius, Virgo-Pisces.
The main misconception is that two opposing signs are different and that they cannot coexist. Sure, they are part of a spectrum and they represent its extremes. However, just as how any spectrum works, it’s very rare for a sign to be 100% authentic and locate itself at one of the poles. It’s always influenced by other planets, other signs, placing it a little closer to the middle of the axis. You may have more in common with your sister sign than you thought.
The 6 axes each have a theme, so naturally, the signs which find themselves at the opposing ends have contrasting opinions about how to manifest themselves in that context. Let’s say the axis is a party. The two signs are experiencing it differently, one of them is in the middle of the dance floor, while the other lingers near the snack table. They are still at the same party together, though. They view the same circumstances, only, they will react differently to it.
Aries-Libra: They set the trends.
The first pair of signs has in common leadership. They are cardinal signs, which means that they start the movement and are usually the first out in the field. The early bird catches the worm. You can already guess why they are different; Aries is confrontational and Libra is a pacifist. Aries creates dissonance, but Libra prefers harmony. I can already sense a theme here, can you? Both of them possess the right tactics to bring a new concept into the world. Aries is the chaotic atoms and Libra is the cosmic glue that keeps them from escaping into other universes. What I’m trying to say is, being active gets things done, but slowing down provides perspective.
Marc Jacobs is an Aries and is credited for launching the grunge look in the 90’s. Of course an Aries introduced grunge into the fashion world. However, this bold initiative is believed to have terminated his employment at Perry Ellis, due to not respecting their clean-cut image. But it was only up from there! Marc Jacobs is a cultural icon and is responsible for many trends from our lifetime. Should I also mention the brand’s incredible marketing through TikTok rising stars? I know it’s the marketing team over at Marc Jacobs pulling the strings, but his Aries legacy lives on, even where he isn’t involved.
Virgil Abloh was a Libra and is best known for his work at Off-White and Louis Vuitton. He managed to bring streetwear into the luxury markets, which, once upon a time, used to be like oil and water. He created a bridge between two seemingly different worlds and birthed a new scene. He definitely was a once in a lifetime creative genius. His landmark collaboration with Nike - the deconstructed reimagination of their signature sneakers - really shows the similarities between Aries and Libra.
Being able to deconstruct and understand the foundation of what you’re dealing with is imperative in order to be able to ultimately build something even better. Aries is taking all the individual parts and figuring their functions out, while Libra understands the entire composition and how each component helps each other out.
Taurus-Scorpio: They stay mysterious
Here is the first pair I consider deeply mischaracterized by people. Taurus is cool, calm and collected and Scorpio is a brooding black hole, there can’t possibly be any similarities. Well, firstly, they are fixed signs, which makes them stubborn and loyal to their cause. They are your ride or die, but only IF they agree with your morals. The passion is present in both of them and having them as allies is very smart. Having them as enemies…I’ll pray for you. That passion can manifest itself through retribution as well. What isn’t properly shown on their axis, though, is the mystery.
Scorpio is already known for being secretive, but Taurus hides this trait better. How well do you know the Taurus in your life? Truth be told, they seem open, but they don’t really share anything substantial. Their associations with relaxation and nature really tricks people into seeing them as zen. Don’t be fooled, because they also carry an intense soul, just like Scorpio. The only distinction is that Scorpio uses silence as their safe. They can’t know what you don’t tell them. They both care about vulnerability, but deal with it differently. So really, a Taurus is not more trustworthy because they appear vulnerable, they are still indecipherable, like a cowboy.
The cowboy mystery comes from their lifestyle and demeanor. The cowboy is often a "man of few words," carrying a stoic, quiet resilience that hints at a complex inner life. They’re known to keep to themselves, and the “lone ranger” archetype paints them as independent figures who don’t reveal much about their past or emotions. In stories, cowboys often wander from town to town with little known about where they’ve come from or why they’re here, leaving others to guess at their backstory. Their history with hardship, often dealing with lost loves, revenge, or escape from past mistakes, adds to their enigmatic appeal.
Scorpio is more like a mage. Mages are mysterious for entirely different reasons. Their power is rooted in a secretive, arcane knowledge that others don’t understand, and they often carry with them symbols, staffs, or tomes that hint at their hidden wisdom. Because magic is usually something acquired through intense study or rare talent, mages are set apart from everyday people, and they tend to live in isolated towers, dark forests, or hidden temples.
Cowboys endure tough terrains and the lawlessness of the Wild West, while mages often live in dangerous worlds where they face mythical creatures and magical threats. Both thrive in difficult environments. They are also iconic characters in storytelling—representing adventure, risk, and a bit of the fantastical. Both Taurus and Scorpio will take your secrets to their graves, but it’s a low chance you’ll ever get to know them fully.
Gemini-Sagittarius: They ask questions.
This is an interesting pair, but for a different reason. Funnily enough, they are closely related to one another by other people. They are both smart, brainy, witty, funny, the list goes on. They share these wonderful intellectual abilities, that people seem to miss that the way they express themselves is entirely different. So, this part will be dedicated to what separates them from one another.
Both Gemini and Sagittarius have thoughts flying a thousand miles per hour in their head, nothing new. A key difference is how they let these thoughts out. Geminis tend to push their ideas outwardly, often going on tangents and forgetting what the main subject even was. This makes them bouncy, rarely staying in one place for too long, both metaphorically and literally. Communication is a given with Geminis, which is a reason why Mercury is at home in Gemini. They eventually learn their own systems of creating a comprehensible thought train. Sagittarius, on the other hand, keeps the chaos contained. This sign is more related to philosophical thoughts, so it makes sense that articulating such notions is more difficult. This makes them adventurous and optimistic, but not a solid foundation rock. Someone needs to be spontaneous in this life and it will be Sagittarius!
But yes, their common ground is questioning everything around them, just like toddlers. Getting knowledge can only be done through curiosity and persistence through being inquisitive. Especially in a world full of information, asking questions keeps them critical and prevents them from accepting things at face value. Questions help them analyze, compare, and find meaning.
I want to honor these signs with some appropriate examples, so I will use music released during their seasons. BRAT by Charli XCX is a notable Gemini release and it’s as straight forward as it can get, really (see track 10: Girl, so confusing where she mends her friendship with Lorde in the remix! Classic Gemini communication). Please Please Please by Sabrina Carpenter is another perfect example of just speaking your mind. Begging your boyfriend to not embarrass you publicly is hilarious and painfully relatable. SZA’s SOS is a 2022 Sagittarius album release, inviting the listener into her mind palace. It’s filled with regret, jealousy, confidence, rage. There’s a lot to unpack and the tone shifts with Sagittarius, making things a lot more complicated to put on the table.
Cancer-Capricorn: They land on top.
Yet another misunderstood duo. They both are related to social endeavors, but one cares too much about people and the other cares too little. I’m guessing you can tell which is which. It’s, once again, a nuanced situation. They both care about how people view them. Cancer is emotional, nurturing and protective, so they get attached easily. Make no mistake, they also are great manipulators. If you cross them, they can become as cold as Capricorns in no time. Capricorns are ambitious and hold high standards for themselves and people around them, so building lasting relationships takes time and effort. But, they are loyal and care deeply for their loved ones. They do whatever it takes to survive out there and they display amazing adaptability. They are cardinal signs for a reason.
Maybe the best way to portray these two is through cats and dogs, because, although they are the most popular domesticated animals, people still seem to not really understand them. Dogs as Cancer, are a man’s best friend, as the saying goes. They are loyal, loving and love spending time with their human. They tend to adopt the moods of the owner and empathize with them. They also seek comfort in the owner in times of stress, so there is a safe haven effect. And yet, there are still more people scared of dogs than cats, considering them as a threat. When a dog turns against you, it’s usually not a good sign.
Cats as Capricorns have a reputation of solitary animals with arrogant and cold behaviors. They don’t trust strangers easily and it takes time to earn their trust. In reality, they are loving and healing companions. Sure, not every cat is clingy, but they will always lay on you when your body aches, trying to heal you with their purrs. When they are hurting, they choose to hurt on their own, usually. Cats are as loyal as dogs and, even if they are not as good as dogs at reading social cues, they know when someone treats them well. A cat is not mean, you just didn’t spend the time to get to know it.
Leo-Aquarius: They don’t relate to you.
This duo relates to one another by being misfits. Aquarius is already known for having a hard time fitting in, due to their quirks and way of thinking. It’s the Saturn effect, unfortunately. Leo, on the other hand, is not really considered an outcast, due to its glowing personality and overexposure. Honestly, they both feel like they can’t relate to the people around them. Both Leo and Aquarius have brilliant creative minds, putting them ahead of many people in this life. Leo gets easily bored by trivial discussions and perspectives, which is why they seem arrogant and dramatic. When they find people on their level, they have tremendous fun. This sign is the popular girl in school, which turns mean because others already put a label on her. Aquarius is the nerd who is also not given a chance to prove themselves. Their brilliant mind expands beyond what is concrete and into the abstract, which puzzles most people.
So, yes, the prom queen and the outcast have in common creativity and being judged by others. They aren’t arrogant, it’s just they’re on a different frequency than yours, usually a higher one. And in my humble opinion, they have solid grounds on being picky with who they spend time with, because it’s not fun having someone else completely mischaracterize you and create a punching bag instead. The Leo-Aquarius axis is a social one, so it creates a reflection of the people around them and what THEY are insecure about. The two signs just get to be projected on.
People with high intelligence sometimes face pressure to conform or “tone down” their ideas and vocabulary to avoid standing out too much. This can be exhausting and feel isolating, as it may feel like they’re hiding part of themselves to fit in. When they don’t conform, they might come off as intimidating or unapproachable, leading to further isolation. It’s also the case for our beloved Leo and Aquarius, which often have to downplay their personalities in order to live a normal life.
Virgo-Pisces: They get obsessive.
And last but not least, Virgo and Pisces. We are entering the realm of idealism and perfectionism, where the mind often gets more credibility than reality itself. Pisces is the exaltation of Venus, making it a very romantic sign. It loves love and chooses to see reality through rose colored lenses. This wonderland clashes with actual personalities of people and can get Pisces natives very attached to others, but based on the scenario they created themselves about the other person. Virgo is a bit more rooted in reality, but spends time in hypotheticals. Being a meticulous sign, they discover every aspect of your personality, but also determine your potential. And here is where things can go downhill. Their obsession becomes the potential of the other person, what they could do, the heights they could rise to. Even though it’s technically accurate, they don’t live in the present and just analyze what can be improved.
This axis also stands the test of time. Both signs endure and are everlasting, Pisces because it transcends time itself and Virgo because its bulletproof quality is timeless and evergreen. This can explain their fixation with getting the best out of people. They care about creating a reality for themselves that will last. This applies to relationships, careers, hobbies, etc. So really, they know that stability is something that can be acquired, but they try to force it on people and circumstances which can simply not remain stable. They are yearners and crave immortality in a way. By establishing themselves somewhere in this lifetime, they gain more power to leave a mark for future generations to look back on and reminisce on Virgo and Pisces.
A fun portrayal of this spectrum is thrifting. In many thrift stores, especially those with a vintage focus, you can find clothing from an era when quality materials and attention to detail were more standard. Pieces made in the past often feature durable natural fabrics like wool, silk, or linen and hand-finished seams or intricate tailoring—qualities that tend to hold up better over time. This is especially true for designer items, which, even decades ago, were crafted with care, making them an investment in both style and durability. Virgo creates impact through lasting quality and Pisces echoes it into different generations, where they can witness and access qualities that are not available on their markets anymore. Certain designer and vintage items increase in value over time, especially if they’re from iconic collections or notable designers. Quality vintage pieces that are well-preserved can even become collectors’ items, turning thrifted finds into valuable pieces that hold historical significance as well as aesthetic appeal. The Virgo-Pisces power stands in value accumulated over time.
This brings us to the end of this, hopefully educational, article. The bottom line is, whatever sits opposite of you is not necessarily to be avoided. Valuable lessons come from the most unexpected places. Opposites often seem entirely different at first glance, but they frequently share surprising similarities. They exist in relation to each other, creating balance and contrast that enhances the value of each side. For instance, light and dark are opposites, yet both are essential to our perception and understanding of the world around us. Same goes for sister signs in astrology. Opposites also reveal shared structures; courage and fear, though contrasting, both stem from a confrontation with uncertainty. In relationships, opposing personalities often complement one another, with each person bringing strengths that fill the other’s gaps. Ultimately, opposites reflect two sides of the same coin, revealing a deeper interconnectedness.
